Toran Gaal set out on a solo Ride Across America (RAAM) on June 1, 2015, departing from San Diego, Ca the ultimate destination being Arlington at the Iwo Jima and Marine Corps Memorial on August 2, 2015. Once the ride is completed, he will place the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Toran is accompanied by a support vehicle driven by Brian Riley.
Why is this a big deal?
Toran and Brian are both combat injured Marine Corps veterans and Purple Heart recipients. Toran was injured on June 26, 2011 in Afghanistan and as a result lost both legs, a hip, part of his pelvis and suffered a severe brain injury. So, Toran will not be on an upright cycle – he will make the entire trip on a hand-cycle. Yes, the whole trip powered by his arms.
In the months and years post injury the Semper Fi Fund helped Toran’s family greatly with a multitude of things including travel and accommodations while they visited him at various VA hospitals. Having family by his side was instrumental to his recovery. In an effort to give back, Toran is doing the ride (3800+) miles on a hand-cycle to raise funds for the Semper Fi Fund so they can continue to assist families of fallen and injured and ill service members.
