JOHN L. QUIRK, SR. John L. Quirk Sr., age 72 of New Castle, DE died on September 25, 2017 at home surrounded by his family after a short battle with kidney cancer.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, John attended Los Altos High School before joining the United States Air Force in 1963 and served in the Vietnam War. While stationed at Dover Air Force Base, John met Barbara Kelly and they married and had two sons, John Jr. and Robert. Upon discharge from the Air Force, John worked for Pepsi-Cola where he pursued his business degree from Goldey-Beacom College. This business degree led John and Barbara to open their own business, Quirk’s Delicatessen in Newark, DE from 1983 to 1987. After the delicatessen was sold, John worked for TCI Cable, which is now Comcast where he retired on medical disability. John was widowed after Barbara passed away in 1994. John married Donna DeAngelis in 1995 and they have spent the past 22 years together. John and Donna spent many years visiting car shows and Myrtle Beach.
John also spent many years as a coach and an active volunteer in the New Castle Little League. He was a member of Holy Spirit Church where he was active with the yearly carnival and worked the chain crew for the football team and now a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton. John was also a fourth degree member of St. Michaels Council #4548 and an avid motorcyclist, prior to his medical retirement.
John is preceded in death by his first wife of 27 years, Barbara; his father, Hugh E. Quirk and his mother, Genevie Cindel and her husband, John Cindel. John is survived by his wife Donna; his sons John Jr. (Dawn) and Robert (Lynn) and stepson, Tony DeAngelis. John is also survived by his sister, Sharon Emerson and her husband Richard and his 6 grandchildren, Cheyanne, Ryan, Arianna, Gabrielle, Alexa and Maegan.
The family would like to sincerely express their gratitude to Compassionate Care Hospice for all their care, love and wonderful work they did for John and his family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donation to Compassionate Care Hospice, 405 E Marsh Lane, Suite 4, Newport, DE 19804.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 27, from 6-8 pm, at McCrery & Harra Funeral Homes, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy(at Duncan Rd-Marshalltown) Wilmington, where the funeral service will be on Thursday, September 28, at 10 am. Burial will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery.
